Your Home Energy Savings

For those of us who have to pay our monthly utility bills the constant increases every few months no longer come as a shock, but at the same we are all becoming more aware of how much energy we waste every year. As we have come to realize that we have been wasting hundreds if not thousands of dollars paying for utilities we did not have to we are starting to look for ways to maximize our home energy savings and cut our utility bills down as far as possible. If you really want to maximize your home energy savings, you first need to have a clear picture of where the waste is occurring in your house. Much of the waste you can figure out for yourself and make simple changes that can dramatically lower your monthly bills. The most obvious change you can make is where you have your thermostat set at. In the summer you can turn the air conditioning up and in the winter turn the heat down, even a change of one or two degrees can have a significant impact on how much you spend to make your home comfortable and chances are no one will notice the difference.

Another good way to help with your home energy saving is to add heavier window coverings like curtains to your windows, in the summer months the will block out the heat from the sun and in the winter they can block the cold from the glass while helping to hold the heat in each room. While you are thinking about your furnace make sure you replace the air filter regularly to keep it running as efficiently as possible. Many homes are also installing awnings over their windows to help keep the sun out and if you are in it for the long run you can plant a few extra shade trees around your house. Another small but significant way to help with your home energy savings program is to replace all of the incandescent light bulbs in your house with either CFLs or the newest LEDs, both of these bulbs use far less energy than the old style bulbs. While it may not seem like a big change in the short term, especially as these new bulbs are a lot more expensive than the old ones, over the period of a year the savings will add up to a figure that you can see and appreciate.
